After I graduate college I plan to attend law school and hopefully become an attorney. With our economy the way it is, it seems finding a job after school is going to be difficult. I interviewed an attorney and my uncle, Anthony Terronova to find out more about my desired profession. Here is a summary of what I discovered.
There are many different types of law that a person can go into including working for a corporation, government, private practice, and legal aid; to name a few. The job market is greatly affected by the economy because if the economy is down, corporations are less likely to hire more attornies. Other factors can include the growth of population in the level of business. Another factor is if you begin your own practice because you put yourself in competition with larger, more established firms.
The biggest pitfall in the profession is the level of competition. You need to attend a four year college and receive a degree from a law school. Also, you need to meet the requirements of the state you wish to practice in. The competition is rising because more people are graduating from law school each year so going to a highly regarded law school gives you an advantage.
When beginning your career, one usually begins working as an associate with more experienced lawyers or judges. From there, they can branch off into being admitted into a partnership or judgeship, becoming an administrator, or even working in a managerial position at a large corporation.
In order to ensure success while you are still in school, it is necessary to be proficient in writing and public speaking. Doing well on the LSAT, having a high GPA, and doing internships in college boost one's chances on getting accepted into a prestigious law school.
Being a lawyer involves a great deal of responsibility and respect for your clients and the people you work with. Also, being able to handle complex situations and analyzing legal problems is necessary to become a good lawyer. As with most jobs, you need to be passionate about it in order to be good at it.

Environmental Footprint
end.
After the 24 hours I reduced the number of planets I would need from 3.6 to 2.5. Since I am a vegetarian, it was not hard for me to reduce the amount of animal products I eat in half. I simply did not drink milk. I recycled all my plastic bottles instead of throwing them out which was difficult because there is no recycling on campus. I also tried not to drive much and when I did need to go somewhere, I waited until my friends needed to go somewhere so we only used one car to run our errands. It surprised me how many resources I used because I simply was never aware. It is a true eye opener to see that if everyone lived like me we would need 2.5 planets to have enough resources for everyone. That is shocking and somewhat scary considering there are many people using way more resources then me. Our environment needs to be saved immediately.

Environment quiz
Start.
After taking the quiz I discovered that if everyone lived like me we would need 3.7 planet earths to have enough resources for everyone. Also, I use 16.3 of earths productive area.
For 24 hours I am going to try to only buy products that were made out of 100% post-consumer recycled material. I am also going to try to reduce the animal products I eat in half.

24 Hours without Technology
End.
I never realized how dependent I was on my cellphone, e-mail, aim, and facebook until I was forced to be without it for 24 hours. I am only dependent on it to mostly waste time. I accomplished so much when I was unable to just text my friends for no real reason. Cell phones are a huge part in our society and almost everyone uses them. I found it difficult to go without technology but I also found it helpful. I am going to try to cut back with my cell phone in hopes to get more things done and not waste so much time. Facebook and aim were not really hard to give up for a day. I didn't feel I was disconnected with anyone because I wasn't on facebook. The hardest thing to give up other than my phone was probably music. I run everyday and to not listen to my ipod while I am running is very hard for me. I'm so used to having music playing so without it, I found myself not motivated to run anymore. Our generation truly depends on technology and I believe it is only going to get worse as we make more technological advances.
It was a good experiment to go 24 hours without the technology we view as necessities. Cell phones are definitely needed but not to the extreme that our generation takes it. Not bringing my cell phone to my classes was helpful because I couldn't check the time often unless there was a clock in the classroom. Not knowing the time just allowed me to focus in the present and not worry about how long a class is. This was an experience that was tough but it showed how dependent our generation is on technology.

Putting race on college applications
Applying to college has become the most competitive it has ever been. Colleges are receiving more applications than ever before and they are being forced to reject more students. Grades, SAT scores and extracurricular activities are the three major things colleges look at. What the application also asks for is the student's family income and the students race among other things. In my persuasive essay I plan to discuss why colleges should get rid of asking for the students' race. It only leaves room for discrimination against all races depending on how diverse the college is trying to be. The election of 2008 has truly made history because the new president, Barrack Obama is half African American. Our country should take a step forward and try to get rid of racism and discrimination in all accounts. A major start would be with college applications to give every student a fair chance, no matter what ethnicity they are, to be accepted into their school of choice.

Free Writing on Two Articles

Boobs and Boors in 'Playboy: The Mansion'
This article, written by Tom Loftus, is explaining how unnecessary 'Playboy: The Mansion' game really is. In the game, you are Hugh Hefner and you are just living the life in the Mansion. All the girls are madly in love with you and you have to run the house. You wear expensive clothes and have long conversations with the girls in the house. Most of the game is in a party scene. You must invite the prettiest, most important girls to the party to boost your own "cool status". Tom Loftus compares many parts of the game to The Sims. Many of the rules are similar it is simply in a different setting.
I agree with Tom that this game is a little unnecessary. There really does not seem to be a point to the game besides trying to live the life of Hugh Hefner. Even so, the parties and girls are not as fun as it seems. The only message portrayed is to get the players to buy the playboy magazine. Tom Loftus simply describes the game and describes it in an unappealing way saying it is not half as fun as the thought of it.

Can Video Games Improve Driving Ability
This article, written by Barbara Ortutay, is explaining Allstate car insurance's new idea. They are trying to improve driving of elderly people from ages fifty to seventy five. The new pilot program, called Insight is offering specialized computer games to the elderly in Pennsylvania to improve their driving. Once they do ten hours, if there are improvements, Allstate Corporations will give a discount on car insurance for those who play. The games are not all driving games, but rather games to enhance reflexes and keep your mind working efficiently. Although accident rates drop from ages fifty to sixty, they begin to rise again the older you become. Allstate Corporation wants to help the elderly and help make the community a safer place to drive in. As of now the computer games are free for 100,000 Pennsylvania drivers and may be offered to other states depending on the results.
I believe this is a good idea because the older one becomes, sometimes the reaction time begins to slow down. Having a way to help older people get those reflexes back so they can still drive is a smart way to handle the situation. Many want elderly drivers off the road, but using games in a positive way to not have their privelages taken away will hopefully be effective.

Video Game Analysis
The first game I played was called Deliver the Net. The point of the game was to drive around Africa delivering bed nets before the mosquitos came out in order to save the people. The faster you went and the more nets delivered, the less people in Africa dying from malaria. I believe this game is very educational in a positive way. It is educating people on what is really going on in Africa with deadly diseases. It is showing that the government needs to send bed nets over there to save the people. If enough people play this game, the incentive to send more nets over seas might increase. This is an effective game because it allows people to be aware of what is going on in other parts of the world that we don't necessarily hear about.
The next game I played was an Obama influenced game. The way to play was to answer questions about the United States such as who was the first president, what the colors of the American flag are, etc. Each question that you answer no matter if it is right or wrong, you are donating 400 pixels toward the Obama advertising campaign. By donating pixels, you are ideally helping post "Obama for President" signs all over the internet. This game is, I feel, a persuasive game because it is persuading you to keep answering questions in order to help promote Obama. They are persuading you to help because if you are willing to help him advertise, you are essentially planning on voting for him.
The final game I played was Darfur is Dying. In this game, you choose a child or adult in Darfur to get water for his or her family. While you are running to get the water, the Janjaweed militias are coming to capture you and bring you to the camp. When you see them coming, you must hide behind a rock. If you happen to get captured, you have to try to survive in the camp while your family is back at home trying to survive. This game, although very sad, is extremely educational. It is making the people aware of how bad life in Darfur really is. This game shows the realism of the hardships those people are going through every single day. If enough people play this game, a change could be made. Darfur is a very serious and dangerous place and something really needs to be done to help those people. I believe a video like this; giving people an idea of how terrible Darfur is at this time, could make people want to make a change and try to help those people in the best way they can.
